50knots at West Kirby

There is now 5 windsurfers in the world that have gone over 50k. Two of them on our own shores at West Kirby this January, Our very own Steve Thorpe @ 50.48k, and Hollands Hans Kreisel @ 50.3k. The other three are Hollands Martin Van Muers @ 50.37k at South-end and Aussie Chris Lockwood @ 50.1k and Craig Spottiswood @ 50k, both on ubber flat waters at Sandy Point. With speed kit getting faster and easier to use, we can expect to see seeds increase further for sure. Im guessing that its only a matter of time before we see 55k peaks:)

3rd January was the strongest westerly winds at West Kirby for years. The worlds fastest where here to crack the 50k, including Farrel O’shea, Steve Thorpe, Hans Kreisel, Jacques van der Hout and many others. Several 48s and 49s were broken but only Steve and Hans managed to hit over 50k. Every one that got out managed to get personal bests. I was really really gutted as it was the first day back at work after the Xmas break, and I could not take the day off to catch this once in a 10-year storm :( Hopefully 2012 will deliver another storm.

2011 was a great year for as I managed to make decent improvements in October to December. Finally managed to crack the 40knot 5 x 10 seconds average with 41.3 knots average, this was much higher than I had ever anticipated. I also got peaks just shy of 44knots. This was enough to put me in position 56th for 2011 gps world rankings, 103rd all-time ranking and 10th in the 2011 British Speed Ladder.  Was very happy:)

For 2012, I plan to stay on the same equipment as I have only just finished getting it all fully tuned. Hopefully I can spend 2012 concentrating on going faster rather than constant tuning. The goals are 45knot peaks and to stay in the top 100 world gps ranking.

In addition to Steve Thorpe, Farrel O’Shea, we have had Ant Baker trying his hand at speed at West Kirby. I think Ant could be very quick soon.

Also have to congratulate Zara Davis on recently being crowned as ISWC European female Speedsailing Champion for the second time. She has also been voted as  Windsurfer of the year (great exposure for speed sailing) and positioned 1st in the world female gps ranking. Well done.
