2018 NORTH SUPER HERO

The consistent evolution of the legendary HERO makes the SUPER HERO the ultimate World Cup wave sail with an extremely wide range of use. On the one hand, it captivates with a manageable top performance, even in nuking spots such as the Canaries or South Africa, remaining perfectly controllable even in fully overpowered jumping conditions. On the other hand, it offers powerful acceleration at the lower wind limit, as you need for down the line riding on Maui or Mauritius. Designer Kai Hopf has moved up the batten above the boom increasing the gap to the foot batten similar to a 3 batten sail. This FREE.BOOMZONE.CONCEPT provides an incredible on-off on the wave. The batten-free area is super easy to pump and offers less resistance for the wind to fill out the profile in the wind in the underpowered conditions, similar to a 3 batten sail. However, in order to ensure high stability in strong winds and uniform a performance, Kai uses two MINI.BATTEN and the HOLLOW.LOWER.LEECH directly above the boom. In addition, RADIAL.LOAD.STRIPES starting from the clew stabilize in particular the boom-free area and ensure an even load-distribution. The result is a 4 batten wave sail with incomparable wide wind range which combines maximum low end power with control and stability.
The low weight makes for incredible handling, while rigging you can already imagine how light and soft the sail feels. The rotation is as smooth as silk, even with minimal outhaul tension. The top of the sail works very effectively to support the power, therefore you can safely choose a sail size smaller than with many other wave sails. This applies to almost any rider, regardless of their weight. Sail sizes range from 3.0 up to 6.7 to cover a maximum range of use. To ensure maximum draft stability the 3 largest sizes feature a 5-batten layout.

Windsurfing Features

  • HOLLOW.LOWER.LEECH (scooped leech outline) with additional MINI.BATTEN stabilizes the profile right above the boom and prevents leech flattering
  • RADIAL.LOAD.STRIPES at the clew improve the stability and extend the wind range
  • Made to survive: the new SUPER HERO features the smallest monofilm window of any 4-batten sail on the market
  • 150 grams lower weight due to WEIGHT.OPTIMIZED.PANEL.LAYOUT
  • Extremely sturdy, unbreakable epoxy battens
  • iBUMPER, the most advanced and effective molded mast protector
  • BALANCED.LUFF.LENGTH: luff as short as possible for radical handling and as long as necessary for maximum wind range

Draft forward or pull on both hands.

Which wave sail fits me best, my sailing style and my board? The latest (board-) developments make it necessary to offer more than one radical wave sail. To understand the differences, the fundamental aspects will be highlighted

VOLT

When going down the line a single-fin wave board wants to be “carved” mainly over your front foot and the rail. This requires high speed, full commitment and a very high skill level. Also you need to stand quite upright over the rail during the bottom turn. Therefore you need a sail with a slightly higher draft position to “force” you into an upright position. In addition the sail needs to go completely neutral during the turn. To achieve this the draft is positioned quite far forward. As a result the sail develops nearly no pull on the backhand and remains completely unaffected when sheeting in or out. On the other hand such sails are more sophisticated to sail, as the sailor does not get back any “feedback” (e.g. when over-sheeting). Also you simply have less to “hold on to”.

HERO

With the trend moving towards multi-fin wave boards the down the line surfing style has remarkably changed. In contrary to single-fin wave boards, multi-fin wave boards don’t get “carved” over the rail but instead get much more turned through the fins. The angular momentum for the bottom turn is now initiated through sheeting in your sail. To do this you need a sail that gives the rider a certain “feedback” triggering the turn. This means a sail with a draft position being further back and therefore pull on both hands.

This pull on both hands has further advantages: As an advantage this pull on both hands means you have something to “hold on to” giving you extra balance/stability (which also counts for flat water sailing on single-fin boards). Also you can rig one size smaller as the further draft back profile produces more low-end power. Another advantage of this new sailing style is that the bottom turn is initiated at much lower speeds which makes it much easier especially for entry level wave sailors. On the other hand pros now can surf much closer to the impact zone. During the bottom turn you do not have to stand upright over the rail anymore but can remain in a natural slightly tucked position. Therefore compared to the ICE our brand-new 4-batten wave sail HERO not only has a slightly further back- but also lower draft position, which helps the high-end control.
